Food: A home made Italian that kicks Thai taste buds, Delicatezza
Delicatezza has been around for almost a decade. The restaurant once occupied a small shop house in mid Thonglor road was among the first few restaurants which offers a tasty home cook meal in cozy atmosphere.
2 years ago it took over Buono restaurant in Thonglor soi 10 between The Hampton condominium and famous night club, Muse. With more seats and available parking space, the restaurant has enjoyed both new and regular customers all year round.
One reason I had not gone back was the increased price per dish for the home cook style meal. But that did not stop Delicatezza from gaining new customers. The place now sees a new type of customers, older crowds with deep pockets.
After 5 years it’s still running, I decided to check it out again.
Once a residence-turned-restaurant in the middle of Thonglor soi 10 is decorated in a pastel tone with the smaller colorful acrylic replica of Picaso paintings stretch across the plain white wall. There are also private rooms for larger group of people. Overall, it gives a spacious yet cozy feeling. (i miss the old white brick wall with personal photos and paintings tho.)
On the receipts we have;
Rocket salad with Balsamic dressing topple with Parma ham and sliced Parmesan – You won’t regret ordering it.
Grilled vegetables (eggplants, bell peppers and zucchini) – If you like grilled vegetables, go for it. The vegetable were sliced and grilled just right with shear scents of olive oil and charcoal.
Spicy Seafood in Tomato sauce – Although there were plenty of Seabass cutlets, prawn, clams, mussels, the key ingredient that makes this a wiped-dry-with-breads-dish is the soup. Disappointedly, the soup taste like a soup that pour out straight from a can of ready made soup base. It reminds me of Tony Roma’s dishes that consist of same tomato base. Very plain in taste, both the soup and meats in it.
Spaghetti Vongole – This dish has lived up to its name.
Spaghetti with spicy Italian sausage, porcini mushroom in garlic and chili – i’ll never order it again. All ingredients still has its own tastes that don’t blend with each others.
Rack of Lamb – They marinate the meat too long that it loses its sweet original taste and texture. I’d only give credits for their ability to make it a medium-rare as request. (Not that many restaurants in Thailand can differentiate between well-done and medium-rare.)
Strawberry in Fresh Cream – This is the signature desert dish. Half-cut fresh strawberry in fresh cream as i remember vaguely, was better. Again the strawberry were not fresh you can taste the soft mushy exterior for any fruit that are no longer fresh. Disappointed.
Mandarin Sherbet – My favorite dish of the whole night. Tangy and refreshing and it’s the only then with homemade taste.
Corkage charge of B 300-400 is applied.
Delicatezza is no longer a homemade Italian restaurant in both taste and atmosphere. Average dishes are priced no less than B 400.
I would consider it a fine restaurant for customers who looks for a place to chit-chat with their friends or casual business dining rather than savory quest.
For me, I might give it a visit again in few years if it will still be around
